Risk assessment.
Before I take any of my photos, I think its important to produce a risk assessment to take into consideration the types of hazards that could occur in particular locations. By doing this, it allows me to understand the risks that could occur, before doing the actual exercise and will help me to think about these risks on the day of taking the pictures. It also helps towards keeping my model safe in the location.

When taking my pictures, I will taking them in white backgrounded areas in my school so I will have to think about the types of hazards that may occur. The only white clear backgrounded place that I could find in the school was the white drop on the stage, which also had artificial lighting and also natural lighting from the windows.

The stage is located in the schools hall, where the canteen is as well. I had to consider this, as the area could become a hazard to myself and my model as there could be food or drinks that have been spilt on the floor. So before taking my pictures, I will have to inspect and the area to make sure it is safe.

Also, most of the time the hall is not very warm and as I have decided that my model will look sexy to suit my chosen genre by wearing clothes, like a dress, shorts or a skirt, I will have to make sure that she keeps herself warm while I am not taking the pictues. This can involved bringing other clothing for her, for examples joggers and a hoodie so she can quickly bung them on or take them off without any trouble.

My chosen location also has artificial lighting, which I can change and control. However, I have never used them before so will have to make sure I get correct help on what to do, before using it and taking any pictures. This piece of technology also has wires and is supported by electricity in order for it to work, this means that I will have to be extra careful whilst using it and make sure I no exactly how I use it before controling it. I will also have to take into consideration if anyone goes near this piece of equipment who are not meant too, to tell them it is a hazardous area where they could trip over wiring that they may not notice.

Conventions of a double page spread, front cover and content page.
I have used secondary research, to look-up previous front covers from the types of magazines that I would want to base mine on round. These type of magazines link very well to the genre of Pop/RnB that I have chosen to focus my magazine on, as they are based artists that are catorgied in this genre.
Flavour..

Looking at the examples that I have chosen from the magazine 'Flavour', it is clear that the magazine style is based around RnB lifestyles and artists. I made sure I picked certain example like these, as my genre is based around RnB and POP. By picking out the covers I like the best, out of this type of magazine, it has helped me massively on the way I want to lay out my magazine front cover and styler it gives off.
We can see from the examples that there is a continious masthead of 'Flavour' in every version of the magazine, and it is based around the same place which is the top of the page. The colour of the masthead is based around the same colour scheme as well, consisting off gold, silver and grey. This gives of the impressions of money and wealth, which this genre is based around. However, there is not a continuous colour for each magazine, which is not conventional in a music magazine.
The main front cover picture is also centered in the middle of the page, with a model looking straight at the camera to attract and appeal to people, which is conventional for any other music magazine. The images are all a mid-shot, which is good as it gives me an idea on what poses my model can do within this shot, as I am thinking off using a midshot in my magazine front cover, instead of usng a close up or long shot. This is mainly because midshots are conventional to music maagzines.
By looking at other magazine cover, from the same genre that i have chosen, it has help me come up with my own ideas to create my cover and what sort of information I will include. Features that include; the masthead, what sort of image I want, including what shot I like best and what sort of pose I want my model to do. It has also gave me ideas into the types of headlines and booasts I want to display on the front cover, for example extra that may come with the magazines, quotes that have come from interview or who is featured in the magazine.

Vibe...

I wanted to choose another R&B and POP music magazine, to compare or comment on similarities between the two. This is will give me a bigger understand on the types of features that this genre will display on/in their magazines. It also gives me an idea on how similar this genre displays there information.
It would seem that 'Vibe' is more related to R&B in comparison to 'Flavour', by the type of clothing the artists are wearing and the stances of their pose. This type of magazine is based around images that are seen as sexy and hot!, but 'Flavour' looks more like a POP magazine, which would suit a younger age group as well through the way the model is posing and how they are dressed and presented.
All of the examples of this magazine are all conventional, by the idea that the image is always based in the middle of the page, with the model looking straight into the camera. We can also see that the masthead is the same, in the same position, with a skyline at the top in every example.

Conventional Two page spread.
Both example that I have chosen are based around the same idea of having a larger picture either in the middle of the page or to the side of the double page spread.

Looking at these spreads, its clear that it shows a main image of the model either centered in the middle of the page or either sides. These pictures show and connote a sexy looking pose that the model is pulling and they tend to be wearing something revealing. I tend to do this in my magazine, inorder to attract my audience and follow conventions.
Content pages.

Mood Board 2; Rock

This is my second mood board, where i have focused the genre of Rock and brainstormed a range of artists that are based in the Rock genre of music. I used many images that inspired me, as some of the artists are not based in this generation and have been around for a while now. However, I have added in some current artists as well. I mainly looked for images that have the theme colors of black, white, grey and red, as these concentrate and link to the Rock genre.

Mood Board 1; Pop and RnB.

This is my first mood board, where I have brainstormed certain images that inspire me in the music genre Pop and R&N. I have chosen specific images that range from the most popular artists at this time and certain images that can stereotype this type of genre. These can include the money image, 'flash' and expensive watches and diamond jewellery. This can stereotype this genre as being focused upon image and having money, to spend on luxury items that can be thought of to make you look better.
The ideology of Pop/RnB music is normally positive or topical based around money, luxury accessaries, love and romance.
Whilst doing secondary research to look for my images, I have chosen a range of pictures that different camera shots; these have ranged from Mid shots, Close Ups and Long Shots.
I have done this, to give me ideas on the type of shots I may choose for my front cover, contents page and to age spread, and the one that stand out for me and that I like.
High angle mid shot.

My Mood Broad.

I have chosen to produce a mood board, as they can brainstorm my idea of the vision I get from certain genre and at the same time I can research idea/images on the typical genres. This can develop my decision on hat music genre I am going to chose for my music magazine. I have chosen to produce two individual mood boards that are based on the music genre Pop and RnB, and Rock. This is mainly because I am stuck on which genre to decide for my main magazine, so in doing this could help me expand my knowledge of the type of background each genre has.

Research Methods.
Throughout most of my task, I will need to use research methods in order for me to research different genres/magazines and to help me design my own magazine. There are several I can chose and they are shown below.

-Primary: this is more about independant research, which is mainly done through surveys, interviews, direct obvservations and questionnaires. A good advantage of this type of research method is that the information can be found out quickly and straight away, it is also highly controlled, which means the information is relevant to what you are finding out about and the research can be decided on how the information is gained and recieved. However, it also has disadvantages as you will have to prepare all the information yourself, such as questionnaires and surveys, and once the information has been gained and recieved, it may be out of date or not neccessary anymore, which could mean that people may not want to fill questionnairs or surveys out, or even attend interviews.

-Secondary: this is based on research which someone else has carried out and published in order for other people to use. You can find this kind of data on the internet, in books, in the library and even newspapers. An advantage to this type of research method method is that it isn't expensive and doesn't take much time seeing as the information you're looking for is already found. A disadvantage of this method is that it isn't specific to the task you're carrying out. Besides this it may be out of date or the information may not be 100% reliable.

- Qualitative: this is a more in depth and detailed research method as it pays attention to peoples attitudes, behaviours and opinions to certain topics. This can be found out by very elaborative answers from interviews and emails. An advantage of this research method is that certain people can be studied in more detail allowing different information to be found out about them. On the other hand a disadvantage is that the answers from the interviews may take time to analyse meaning that it is time consuming.

- Quantitative: this is normally based on numbers and statistics of what you're researching. These are normally done from closed questions in interviews, surveys and questionnaires. A good advantage to this is that it is highly trustworthy and you can finalise the results easily. A disadvantage to this is that they are relatively time consuming and need a lot of effort.

Research methods that I might carry out:
For certain areas of my work, I think secondary research would be best to carry out. This could include finding out about the different bands on the internet and finding copies of style models as I cannot get a Flavor magazine in England. The kind of primary research that I would do is creating and carrying out questionnaires to find out about my target audience likes and dislikes. The good thing about these are that they won't require a lot of time so hopefully my work will get done quickly but still at a quality standard.
Q Magazine.

Brief history of the magazine..
Q magazine was first published in october 1986 and was produced differently to other music magazines as it had a monthly production, with a high standard of photography and printing. The magazine was originally meant to be called 'Cue', to signify a record, ready to play, however this was changed due to the fact that it could be mistaken for a snooker magazine. Another reason they wanted to use the name 'Q' was because it was a single-letter title, which would be more prominent on newsstands.  The magazine also had a sub-heading titling 'The modern guide to music and more', however this was based in the early years of the magazine so now is not present.

What is the typical content..
This particular magazine has an extensive review section, based on the features that are contained in the magazine this includes; the new releases of music, reissues, music compilations, film and live concert reviews, as well as radio and television reviews. The magazine also lists approximately eight albums, which states and classes the best new releases of the last three months, on top of this the magazine used a star-rating from one to five to rate albums, songs and new releases. Some of the magazine is produced purely based on interviews with popular musical artists and has a special edition section based on musical times, genres or important/influential musicians. The magazine also offers promotional gift, that are added into the magazine, such as CD's or books. Mostly every copy that has been made of this particular magazine, has had a different message on the spine, which has inspired many other magazines like 'Empire' and the football monthly 'FourFourTwo'.  The magazine contains questions; Cash for Questions, which were made by readers, for celebrities/bands to answer and could then get the chance to win money if there questions are printed.

Who is the typical reader..
To find this information out, I again used the National Readership Survey (NRS) to find research on the typical people that would buy this magazine. It shows that mostly men are interested in buying the magazine, in comparisons to females, as there is a total of 345 males and 132 for females. This clearly shows that mostly men like this type of genre of magazines and the specific content that is shown. The website also shows us the particular age range on who purchased the magazine. This told us that mostly ages between 15-44's brought 386 issued of Q magazines, and another 90 copies were sod by ages between the ages of 45+.

Magazines Housestyle..

'Q' magazine is another example of a conventional magazine, in relation to the way it is set out. Looking at example of this magazine, I can see they use the same masthead in every copy. This is based in the left hand corner of the page, with the same colours, red and white, with the masthead being 'Q'. This ensures that each and every magazine keeps the impression of continuity and so readers can always know which magazine they are about to purchase. Having the title a single word, it makes it more catchy and easier for the readers to remember; mainly so they can buy it again.
In every copy of the magazine, there is always an artist, posing for the front cover, who mainly is linked to the type of genre the magazine is aimed at' this draws buyers in as they are attracted to the artist.

Who produces and distributes the magazine..
The publishers for this magazine is 'Bauer Media Group', which is a large publishing company in germany, based in Hamburg. They also work in another 15 countries worldwide. Q magazine is  distributed by a company called Frontline, which aso distributed another magazine like 'Kerrang' and 'Mojo'.

How are social groups represented..
The type of social groups that would be interested in this magazine are most likely to be individuals that like indie/punk/rick bands. This is mainly because the type of artist that are show, on this magazine have been artists like 'Kings of Leon and 'Russell Brand', that fall under this category. I also think this magazine could fall under the social group of 'Pop' as well, as artist like 'Adele' and 'Cheryl Cole', which could be stereotyped into the group of pop music.

We can see on this example of Q magazine, that Lady Gaga is posing half dressed, meaning it would be more attracting the male population, in comparison to females; which therefore links back to the typical genre of this magazine. This is mainly because she is exposing herself and females are less likely to be attracted to a women half dressed.

NME Magazines.

Brief history of the magazine..

New Musical Express, commonly known as NME, is a music publication in the UK, which has been published weekly since March 1925 and was the first British paper to include a singles chart.By the 1970s, the magazine had became the best-selling Brish music newspaper. NME started off as a music newspaper, and gradually moved nearer to a magazine format in the 1980's, then changed from newspaper in 1998.

What is the typical content..

The typically content on the magazine will consist of the main artist, which is mainly a single singer or a band, whilst having their name/band name as the most important title on the page, apart from the title of the magazine. A good example is the front cover on the right, showing the artist 'Mia' in the centre on the page, and her name to the side, in bold, making her name stand out the most. The front cover won't be too busy, however wont be empty either, usally using a burst to show off the interesting stuff inside. We also see different colour schemes each week as well, depending on which sort/type of artist is placed on the front and what inspires them. I like this idea as it can be more indiviudal for the artists taste and likes, and not always the producers way off thinking.
Also, the magazine has a typical layout, which is very similar to a newspaper as most of the news sections has a colour scheme of black and white.
Unlike any other magazine, NME doesnt have a contents page stating what is on each page, however instead, has a page that lists what artists are featured in the magazine and what page they are on. There have been a wide range of artists that have appeared in the magazine, which consists of about 70 pages, these include Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Oasis, Kings of Leon and many more.

Who is the typical reader..

As I dont read this type of magazine, it was hard to comment on what type of audience would read this magazine, so I used the National readership Survey (NRS) to help me find out the information I was searching for.

From this it shows that this magazione is more popluar with males, as more males have brought it, in comparison to females and in totaly 253,000 people brought this magazine between October 2010 and September 2011. However, we cant set this as the number of people that have the magazine, during this time, as many people could have read it in a shop or through a copy of a friends. The website also tells me the sorts of age range that have brought this magazine, and a big margine tells me that 15-44 and 45+ buy it the most.

Magazines Housestyle..

NME's has a very conventional housesytle that most magazines follow. Every copy of this magazine, we can see that the masthead, which is NME, is found situated in the top fair left hand corner. This follows a conventional imagine of a magazine, as the titles are always placed in an area where the audience can notice it straight away, and its bold enough to stand out from the rest. The masthead is also in the colour red, making up one of the three theme colours. Looking at most of the NME magazine, I get certain impressions of what sort of genre it is aimed at, as most of the images are unusual, 'in your face' and aggressive; this is not with all the images however, but I come to the conclusion that this particular magazine wants to creat an an indie/rock genre for the use of the artists as well.

Who produces and distributes the magazine..

IPC, which stands for International Publishing Company, produced NME and Time Warner distributed it. NME also reaches out on media aspects like 'nme.com', 'NME radio' and 'NMETV', with live events and ward ceremonies as well.

How are social groups represented..

By looking at most of the images and context used within this magazine, it is clear that the social group which is represented is based around the genre of rock/indie/punk music. This type of genre is being represented and sterotyped on the things they are doing on the front cover so they could come across as aggressive, wild and unusally sorts of people and groups. I know this from the types of colours that are used throughout each copy of the magazines, there is a running pattern of dull, dark adn black colours that represent the rock/punk genre, with some red, yellow and blue colours to show a sense of indie.

Anything interesting..
There are a number of, what shall I say, unsuitable pictures of women that are added in to the magazine and it still seems to be aimed at women in generally at the same time.

History of Music Magazines.

Before producing the front cover, two page spread and a contents page of my music magazine, I am going to research into the history of two popular mucis magazines.
The two I have decided to do are 'NME' and 'Q' magazine.

I thought it would helpful to search into current music magazines as it gives me a wider picture in to the sorts of things I will have to add in and produce for my two page spread, contents page and front cover, of my music magazine.
Different Generes.
Within the music industry, there are different types of music that fall into different genres, depending on the style of music it is. The types of genres are shown below:

Target Audience, Ideology and Representations.
When creating a music magazine, it is very important that it targets a certain genre of people, so that the magazine is successful and appeals to them. This will ensure that an audience will buy it, read it and like it.

The use of colour, font and images can represent on the type of the genre that the magazine is aimed at. A prime example is having dark, dull colours like black and grey, which would inventional be used witihn an indie/rock magazine, neithertheless colours such as gold, yellow and blue represent more of an rnb/pop magazine. The images below from the following magazine 'Kerrang!' indicate the representation of a Rock genre and the second example 'Top of the Pops' indicate the representations of a Pop magazine.

When thinking about the genre Rock, it is always thought of as an anti-social and violent genre, that always produces music that is loud and aggressive. This can then mean, that a cover of a Rock magazine would use dark and dull colours, with big, bold shattered fonts, which displays a sense of aggression. I also think the cover will be cluttered with sell lines, tag lines (and maybe bursts) to show a sense of loudness, which would attract the reader. On top of this, many rock artists express their feelings and emothions through there lyrics in their songs,  soI think there is a commercial side to include some these on the front cover, to attract readers. and promote the magazine.

When considering Pop music, I think it is thought of as innocent and social, nothing displayed in Pop magazines or the music is seen as bad or unsuitable. So for this reason I think it would be clear that the magazine would be brightly coloured, with plenty of pictures and tag lines, which pormote certain things. Pop music isn't displayed as being loud and aggressive, its more linked to happiness, love and relationships. I think therefore this means that the magazines will be less cluttered, will look simply and pretty. Pop magazines are seen as innocent as they have next to none sexual references and swearing, which gives me the impression that the model or artists that are shown on the cover are looking happy  and enthusiastic. As music magazines are made to sell and make money, it is clear that the front cover is the most important features to attract the reader, so to do this it is important to give the target audience what they want. Many people that like Pop music, are most attracted to the artists, so by having an attractive model on the front cover I think will attract the reader.

Ideologies
Ideologies are around the idea of a group of people that have certain beliefs or ideas about something in particular, this means that different genres of music have different ideologies, which therefore can affect how they are represented. For example, Pop and hip-hop/R&B show very different ideologies as they have many different ideas behind them. When it comes to Pop, there is a strong idea of being positive, non-violence or abrasive, however when it comes to R&B/Hip-Hop, you get a sense of negatitive behavour, associated with drugs, violences, sex and being agressive.

Main Task.

Now that I have finished my Preliminary Task, I need to move onto my main task, which consist of creating a music magazine.  By the end of this task I need to make sure that i have a front cover, content pages and a two page spread. Before doing this however, I need to do research into the history of music magazines, researching methods and textual analysis on existing texts.

My Final picture.

I have chosen this picture in comparison to the others as it gives off a positive idea of the school as my model is smiling and looking happy. I told her to smile as she looked straight into the lens, as it gave I have also edited the size of the picture so my model stands out more.

My contents picture.
