Research Methods.
Throughout most of my task, I will need to use research methods in order for me to research different genres/magazines and to help me design my own magazine. There are several I can chose and they are shown below.
-Primary: this is more about independant research, which is mainly done through surveys, interviews, direct obvservations and questionnaires. A good advantage of this type of research method is that the information can be found out quickly and straight away, it is also highly controlled, which means the information is relevant to what you are finding out about and the research can be decided on how the information is gained and recieved. However, it also has disadvantages as you will have to prepare all the information yourself, such as questionnaires and surveys, and once the information has been gained and recieved, it may be out of date or not neccessary anymore, which could mean that people may not want to fill questionnairs or surveys out, or even attend interviews.
-Secondary: this is based on research which someone else has carried out and published in order for other people to use. You can find this kind of data on the internet, in books, in the library and even newspapers. An advantage to this type of research method method is that it isn't expensive and doesn't take much time seeing as the information you're looking for is already found. A disadvantage of this method is that it isn't specific to the task you're carrying out. Besides this it may be out of date or the information may not be 100% reliable.
- Qualitative: this is a more in depth and detailed research method as it pays attention to peoples attitudes, behaviours and opinions to certain topics. This can be found out by very elaborative answers from interviews and emails. An advantage of this research method is that certain people can be studied in more detail allowing different information to be found out about them. On the other hand a disadvantage is that the answers from the interviews may take time to analyse meaning that it is time consuming.
- Quantitative: this is normally based on numbers and statistics of what you're researching. These are normally done from closed questions in interviews, surveys and questionnaires. A good advantage to this is that it is highly trustworthy and you can finalise the results easily. A disadvantage to this is that they are relatively time consuming and need a lot of effort.
Research methods that I might carry out:
For certain areas of my work, I think secondary research would be best to carry out. This could include finding out about the different bands on the internet and finding copies of style models as I cannot get a Flavor magazine in England. The kind of primary research that I would do is creating and carrying out questionnaires to find out about my target audience likes and dislikes. The good thing about these are that they won't require a lot of time so hopefully my work will get done quickly but still at a quality standard.
